Any followers in the Northamptonshire area care to chime in and help? :)
England is super easy to drive around. I’m American and England has been my home for the better part of a decade. I was used to long drives, so being there was great because there is so much to see in such short distances.
Cambridge and Oxford have tons of brilliant museums, an tours, and punting (boating basically) (even in the cold months), and neither are too far a drive.
London’s not too far either, and it’s London. There’s so much to do in winter. Go to the Tower of London for a tour. Hampton Court Palace always has great events in all seasons. All the national museums (British Museum, V&A, Science Museum, Natural History Museum, etc.) are free entry. See a show in the West End. See St. Paul’s Cathedral and Westminster Abby. Go to Borough Market. Definitely.
Bath is beautiful in all seasons and their Christmas Market is excellent. It’s better than the one’s in London
And Hadrian’s Wall is amazing to hike in the winter, though it’s like a 5 hour drive from the RAF base. The Lake District is gorgeous all years round, with things to do, but also a drive. Make sure your shoes are good for trudging through snow.
Many of the grand country Estates are closed in the winter months, but their grounds are usually open for walks. I think Chatsworth might be open all year and that is definitely worth a see and only a couple hours drive.
Definitely check out the National Trust for things to do in your local area. That will be really useful for helping you explore.
Also, pubs are the best during an English winter. The BEST.
Thanks for all the handy info, I’m reblogging in case anon doesn’t see in notes.
